Appleton, WI Day 1 - 06/24/2001

Published at 6:43 PM in , ,

Today we drove to Appleton, Wisconsin, which is about two hours north of Madison and thirty minutes south of Green Bay.  We decided to skip Green Bay (sorry all you Packers fans!) and spend our time in Appleton instead.  There were more family friendly things to do in Appleton.

Building for Kids Museum

Our first stop was the Building for Kids Museum.  This is an ASTC member museum, so they honored our Fernbank membership and we all got in free. This is a very hands on children's museum.  It was similar to the one in Chicago, just on a smaller scale.

They were happy to point to Georgia!

The kids loved to slide through a 'heart.'  There was an area to play with golf balls to figure out how to get them to land in different buckets by adjusting the ball's speed and starting point.

Golf Ball Experiments

There was a special exhibit there titled "Once Upon a Time," which focused on children's fairy tales. It covered everything from Cinderella to Beauty and the Beast.  It allowed kids to dress up like characters and experiment with items related to the stories.

There was a nice arts and crafts center, but we weren't able to fit that into the schedule.  The kids did spend time in the water room and climbing through a tree house that spanned all three floors of the museum.

The last area we went through was set up like a small town, complete with a gas station, grocery store, and doll hospital.  The kids got a kick out of that, primarily because it was geared towards younger kids and they felt like giants in there.

It was a nice visit.  Our Fernbank membership has definitely paid for itself.  We have saved well over the $85 membership fee we paid by visiting these museums.  Thanks again to my friend Christina Luke for that information.

After we got back to the RV, we made Jim a birthday cake.  On his actual birhtday, we took him out to eat.  So since this was the first chance we'd had since then, we jumped on the chance to do something nice for him!  It was yummy!

Of course he couldn't resist!
