Beckley, WV - Day 2 - 10/04/2011

Published at 9:39 PM in , ,

Since we didn't have enough time to finish going through the Exhibition Coal Mine, in Beckley, WV, we stuck around Beckley another day to finish our visit.  We finished up some homework, and headed out.  The museum was happy to let us in for another day without paying for admission again.  The only thing we couldn't do was ride down into the coal mine again, which was fine with us.

Cash Register at the Coal Camp General Store

We started off at the schoolhouse.  It was built and used in a coal camp from 1925 to 1965.  It was used for 1st through 8th grades.  They had old readers for each grade level laid out on the desks, and a list of rules for teachers from 1850 and 1915.  Teachers would be fired for getting married! The board of education knew that if teachers got married, they would have children. Then, not only would they leave to care for their families, but children weren't taught about where babies come from in school in those days. I guess it makes sense, but it really surprised me.

After the schoolhouse, we went to the Youth Museum located on the property.  It is housed in an old railroad car.  They have a library nook built into an indoor tree, a seasonal exhibit based on an author's work, and many brain teasers.  We spent the most time at the brainteasers.  They were puzzles you had to make into a certain shape, or balance nails on the head of one nail.  Things like that.  Most of them had us completely stumped, though.  Thankfully, this very nice lady that works for the museum came through and showed us how to think about the problems differently so that we could figure them out ourselves. Some of them were painfully obvious in the end.

You can see the shock on Rachael's face!

After the Youth Museum, we went outside to tour the mountain homestead buildings.  It was like stepping back in time.  We had a great time.

After we finished up there, we got on the road to Ohio.  That makes state number 10!! Woo HOO!

More pictures in the Photo Gallery.  Also, I am updating our Current Location as we go.  Feel free to check it now and then!
