To New Orleans We Go! - 02/19/2012

Today we spent most of the day driving.  I know New Orleans really isn't that far, but the roads were horrible, and the bouncing was so bad, we had to slow down so we weren't flopping all over the place.

We stopped at the Mississippi Welcome Center.  They had hot coffee - for which I was really grateful!  It was a really nice center.  The girls wanted their picture with the really pretty carousel horse.  And of course we had to take a picture by the sign outside.  It was really chilly and windy, but at least not raining.

It was hard to believe, but the interstate was even worse in Louisiana.  So it truly made for slow travel.

Once we crossed Lake Pontchartrain, that's where the traffic really started.  The turn for Hwy 90 Business West, which heads into the downtown New Orleans area, was crazy.  The GPS said we had a total of 15.4 miles to go, but it was going to take us 54 minutes with traffic.  Well that turned out to be about right.  Ugh.  For the most part, people were cooperative and let us change lanes as we needed to.  We had to go through a tight tunnel at one point…that was a little scary because of the tight squeeze.

We made it successfully to Naval Air Station New Orleans and found the RV park.  It is a brand new park, open for only a few weeks.  It is really nice, and close to the Exchange (for shopping!) and the Commissary.

We actually stopped in at the Exchange before we parked.  We needed milk and fruit, plus we just like looking in there.  Something quite attractive about shopping with tax-free benefits…

We got settled in for the night and did some reading about the history of Mardi Gras.  We all learned a lot.

Tomorrow we are headed into New Orleans to watch the parades.  It should be quite an experience for us all!
